Rapping is a musical form of vocal delivery that incorporates “rhyme, rhythmic speech and street vernacular which is performed or chanted in variety ways, usually over a backbeat or musical accompaniment. Rap is often associated with, and is a primary ingredient in hip-hop music, but the origins of the phenomenon predate hip-hop culture.
This 68-year old grandma from the Philippines named Mercifuletes Viola or Lola Mercy is one the Filipino contestants who will move on to the next round of Asia’s Got Talent Season 2. She entertained the judges when she raps Jessie J’s “Price Tag” for her audition drawing loud cheers, ecstatic applause and nice words from the show’s judges.
“I was so, so entertained by you and I wasn’t alone,” Indonesian recording artist Anggun told the lively pensioner.
David Foster chimed in by quipping that he was smitten by Viola, who nailed the rap parts without dentures.
“Are you currently single? Cause I’m always looking,” he told Viola, who turns out to be a huge fan of his.
She came onstage with her sunglasses and red caftan. After talking briefly with the judges, she removed her loose dress and revealed an all-black outfit with gold chains around her neck. A glittery bull cap completed her look.
As she sang the upbeat song, she threw out paper bills coming from inside her blouse.
She received a unanimous yes from David, Anggun, and Jay. Lola Mercy also got bonus kisses on the cheek from both David and Jay.
