Henry Sy is a Chinese-Filipino business magnate, investor and philanthropist. He is the richest person in the Philippines, owns retailers and real estate throughout the country. His family-owned SM investment is the largest retailer in the Philippines with stakes in banking, property and retail.
Henry Sy has a hardworking granddaughter, Nicole Coson, a 23-year old visual artist. Despite her family’s wealth, she decided to make a name for herself – She is based in London, working hard to succeed and achieve her dreams, instead of just having fun and living a carefree life.
She is a full-time artist who studied in London, graduating with honors at the Central Saint Martins. She also studied pottery at the Jalan Bahar Clay studios in Singapore.
Nicole has a studio in London and is now an acclaimed artist. Her Danish boyfriend of five years, Kristian, is also an artist.
According to Nicole: “In London I get to pave my own way. I definitely don’t need to use my mom’s connections to get anywhere. I really like the fact that I get to see it through myself.”
Her mother is business magnate Teresita Sy-Coson (of SM and BDO)—and Filipino audiences tend to judge her motivations and her work because of being the granddaughter of the wealthiest man in the Philippines.
“Yeah,” she says. “It could be. That’s why I think it’s really important for me to do a good job.”
Nicole appreciates the way her mother is supportive without being protective.
She said: “She’s kind of confident in my being able to survive. She knows I’ve always wanted to be a painter.”
